Here is a site that has withstood the test of time for so long that it harkens back to the old days when we programmed sites with tables. There is nothing really wrong with that for a site like this however, and sometimes the information and functionality just doesn’t need to change that much over time.

Another technique often used in those days was to make everything fit on pages that were all a fixed height, and this is one of those templates. We were always surprised by the number of customers we had who wanted to see everything on a page with no scrolling. It’s a nice idea, but in reality it almost never works since most of the time you need variable height pages to allow for more content. When we ran into that problem on this site, we would need to create links that opened new pop-up windows.

Ah, the good old days. It’s actually becoming kind of nice to see some of these older sites still in existence though. Lots of people were doing Flash sites like this (which needed to be fixed height) and some of them were incredibly cool. Now that web design techniques are becoming more standardized, much of that is gone now and some of the unique creativity we saw during those times has been lost.

Update: The Energy Star Home Performance Program was a new concept when we designed their first website, and it ran successfully enough over the years that it’s since been redirected to a devoted section on their main website.
